Don't you have an old handset that you could use whilst it is being repaired? Tmobile, my carrier, offer you the oldest most rubbish handset as a replacement which can basically make calls and text nothing else. I preferred my own old Samsung phone which was still about a decade newer than what they offered when my old K810i had to go in for repair. Its a shame P4U don't offer a substitute but then it may be one that you wouldn't want anyway!

It clearly needs repairing, so I think you are going to just have to bite the bullet and send it in and hope it doesn't take too long. I am no expert on consumer law so don't know what else to suggest. You could try ringing P4U and arguing the point, or going into the shop and doing the same but whether it would get you anywhere I don't know.

So I was having sporadic restart problems like a few others out there. It began with the handset getting hot as it began a reboot cycle whilst performing basic tasks like email, messaging and browsing. Soon it started to happen during calls too and refused to quit rebooting until I removed the battery which got tedious quite quickly. A reinstall of firmware did nothing to help and neither did a factory reset. Removal of SIM and/or memory card didn't help either and my annoyance grew.

Today I woke up with handset that was almost hot enough to melt that only buzzes the vibration motor when the power button is held down. No lights no charging light, no screen response nothing...

Phones4u want to send the handset away and leave me with nothing and Orange won't touch it as they have decided it was not an 'Orange handset'. SE I presume will want to try and repair this handset but am I within my rights to ask for a new one? Under contract law I believe it states I should be provided with a working handset to compliment my monthly payments for airtime etc. but does this cover a faulty unit? When my LCD tv broke after 5 months it was replaced no quibble by Saisburys of all retailers! Does this situation not reflect a similar situation and demand a the same response from retailer if not provider or manufacturer?

I work in a hospital and need contact at all times in case of emergency and right now I am disconnected in just the wrong way.

Could someone please advise the most expedient way to solve this problem without me handing over more money to replace the handset within 48 hours?

It must be a serious hardware problem. Why should you spend money when the phone is in warranty period? I recommend you to hand it over for replacement.

Well, consumer law suggests they should be allowed a reasonable time to repair the faulty item but what does reasonable mean? I think that is a very subjective term and relative to the 'owner'. Consumer rights state the item should be also be substituted like for like if an inconvenience occurs to the end user or owner. I certainly do not own another handset which could stand in let alone one os that level of complexity or technology so I will be inconvenienced to fairly high level. Again this my personal opinion abou the situation, everyone else's idea might be very different.

Phones4u at contact point when the handset was 'purchased' were not very helpful and couldn't do anything more than ask for teh handset back so that they could be given the opportunity to repair it. No time limit was placed on this and I shudder at the rumours of how long handsets float around in the ether of their repair shop. I am I within my rights to ask for a freeze on my contract if I give in and let them try to repair handset as I won't be getting any use from it? Going back to consumer law I am going to inconvenienced financially if I have to let go of teh handset for repairs.

This is all so opinion based and open to much interpretation from either side to squirm out of me getting help with a very difficult situation where I need to be contactable but have no working handset.
