I have a detailed contacts list in Outlook, and saved in documents as a csv file. It's taken years to collate and I would like to copy it into my phone, including addresses and notes about birthdays etc. Is there a way to do this? Ideally, it would be magic to delete contacts from the phone memory and the sim and transfer them all fresh. Otherwise I'm going to have a lot of typing to do!

I would suggest you use googlemail to copy your .csv into and then sync your phone with the google account and your contacts will load on to your phone.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/outlook-help/export-outlook-contacts-to-google-gmail-HA001148902.aspx

There is no space on the phone for birthday, but again in google you can use their calendar and sync that with the phone. You have to add a special calendar

http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=37098

Have a look in the More section if it isn't open when you click in the link.

I use an app called Jorte on the large X10 which I think was a market freebie and its much nicer in my opinion than the stock one and you can sync that with google calendar, you could give it a go on the mini to see if it works for you.

Hope some of the above helps, but if you need to ask anything else please fire away!
