Android 9 clock position XZ2

Xz2 just revived the offical Android 9 update and the clock has moved from the traditional right side to the left.

This was a development for notched devices and since Sony doesn't carry a notch why is it baked into our SW.

No option to change position and now makes the "live" side of the notification tray look like there is an active notification on a quick glance.

Muscle memory has us look instinctively to the right side for the time so now that needs to be re learned

Yeah not a massive failing but frustrating and surely easy to fix

You'd think...

But no, we all thank Google for this amazing "feature" of android 9, as they decided to not only cater for stupid notches, but instead went full crazy and baked the left hand clock into android 9 base firmware.

Yeah and I think a pretty below par implementation of the physical volume controls as well.

First android update I have actually thought.. Maybe I will just flash back.

9 does don't feel intuitive... I hope having run the DP2 beta on my old pixel things would have improved

Hi @Neilr1975, sorry for the late reply, but I had to request some information.

You might experience that the status bar shows the time in the left corner instead of the right. This is part of Google's user interface design for Android Pie and cannot be changed in the settings.

I understanding having to look in the top left instead of the top right is something that you will have to get used to and it was the same for me. Now after some time I get confused when I check in a device not running Android Pie.

I want to know why Sony removed the AM / PM icon with Android 9 ?

At least add an option to show / hide .

One more thing ,why still no more font style or at least supported new Google " product sans " font ?

... And you're completely right, they're starting to make Android way worse: like, for Apple users - or, something. Meh! 😕

Nope, none. Google likes it that way. Even Pixel users are frustrated with this "feature". The only thing we can do in flooding Google's forum with feedback.

Hi @Nostromov!

Based on the information that this is a part of Google's user interface design for Android Pie, it's intended to have it on the left side instead of the right side.

In your post you mention that you are using an Xiaomi device and since I can't speak for how their "version" of Android 9.0 looks, but you can always get in touch with their support and see if this can be changed, or at least voice your opinion about it, so they know that you want a change!

Dear Sony ...

This is not just about the clock moving positions for us who run the 'Compact' Xperia phones.

The clock moving to the left blocks some of the notifications icons on the small screen version phones ... one of those is email notifications icon which is a critical phone function.

Obviously Google doens't think any phones capable of running A9 still have small >5" screens anymore (fair assumption)

Sony, you should have considered this with your release but obviously overlooked it!

*Please add option to change clock position, or move it back for the Xperia Compact phone editions.

We now have 2 baked phones that are useless if we can't operate email properly on them.

This will affect my next phone purchase (which apparently has been bought forward if this is not resolved)

Dissapointed Sony phone fan!

That sounds very strange, would it be possible for you to get back to with a screenshot of how it looks for you? You can take a screenshot if you press and hold the power button and then you tap on "Take screenshot".

I just want to make sure that I understand exactly what you mean and I think a screenshot will explain it the best.

To further explain the symptoms, the notifications system has a specific order it sets app notifications (not in the order that they are received). Email first, SMS second etc. the Email app notification icon never displays anymore because the first icon (email) seems to be obscured by the clock (e.g. notifications bar hasn't moved enough to the right to accomodate new clock).

I expect this is because Google have set formatting boundries (for want of a better description) based on phones with larger screens / bigger resolutions (more pixels wide).

I've collated a series of screenshots which show various notifications coming in and demonstrating the icon ordering, as well as notifications settings screenshots that show notifications are configured correctly and Email notifications ARE being "sent" (phone's terminology)

... I'm an engineer and work on phones, phone apps, dev and testing etc. all the time ... so have an insight to what causes these types of 'bugs' more-so than just an end-user

Hi again @Mal-NZ and thank you so much for the information and the screenshots!

I see now that I forgot to ask you a very important thing. When you receive a new Email and the icon is not shown in the status bar, do you still get a notification and you can drag down the notification bar/see the notification on the lock screen? I just want to make sure that it's "only" the icon that is missing and the rest of the notifications for the application are working correctly.

How about the notifications for music playing? When the Music of Spotify is playing the icon is ranked on the left even before the Email-icon. Can you see the music player icon when the phone plays a song?

Is there a chance the clock position will ever change or be customisable? The opeator id pushed the clock off my screen so i cannot see it,this is highly inconvenient

Hi @JV8, welcome to our forum!

That looks very strange indeed. To my knowledge, the name of the operator should not be shown in the status bar, only when you drag down the quick settings. I haven't been abroad with an Android 9 device though, but I'm pretty sure that is not how it supposed to look, even if you are roaming.

Are you in Sweden at the moment and you are with Vodafone normally, but you are now roaming on Telenors network in Sweden? If that is the case, do you remember if it was the same when you aren't roaming?

It may be something special with the customization you are using because I have never seen this before and I'm fairly sure that someone would have mentioned it before.

Let me know how it was without roaming!
