Phone randomly stops charging

Hello everyone.

I got my Z3 2 months ago. I had no problem charging it before, it used to charge fine but after 3 weeks, it started to act strange during charging process. Even if the phone is plugged in fine, the phone charges for few minutes then stops charging again. The charging LED light turns off and when i check the phone, theres no charging signal. But sometime it charges fine without disconnecting. I thought it was my charger's problem and i tried 2 more new chargers and its still the same. I was running 4.4.4 when this problem occured so i was guessing maybe it was software related issue. I updated to 5.1.1 but the problem still exists. I am using USB cable to charge it. It happens with both the wall charging and PC charging, I even tried factory resetting but no luck. I don't use wireless charging or any charging dock, only USB cable.

Anyone has similar problem? I'd appreciate if someone can help me out with it. And sorry if this is a wrong section to ask for something like this.

Could you try a different wall charger and usb cables?

Welcome to the community,

This could still be software related, you could attempt a software repair on the device to see if this helps, however if this doesn't then you would be looking at getting the device to a service agent for assessment.

Hello, uliwooly and Jake-SonyXperiaSupport. Thank you for replying.

I tried to perform a software repair but somehow i am not able to. It says that the software for my device is not available. So i tried using different cable and wall charger as uliwooly suggested above and the disconnecting issue seems to be gone, however my device is getting warmer while charging. Also the battery percent increases a lot faster than before, like +1% every 2 minutes. Is that normal for this device?

Cut the cable and throw it in trash.
Charging percentage to time differs. In the beginning it's with one speed, and of the end it's with another speed.
I thing it's ok now.

Hi sjns19,

It takes around 2.30 to 3 hours to full charge a device, but it will seem as though it is charging much faster if the device is say at 10% charge or less. A device getting warm while charging is rather normal, however are you using a Sony Mobile charger or third party?

Hi, Jake-SonyXperiaSupport.

The charging time seems to be ok now, it takes around 2 hours to be fully charged. Used to take up to 6-7 hours with my old charger which i was struggling with. And yes, i am using Sony's charger that i bought for Z3, somehow the phone getting warm while charging isn't yet fixed. If this is not normal, are there any solutions you could recommend me to solve this problem?

Getting warm whilst on charge is rather normal sjns19. A good restart to the device before charge can generally help with this.

Hello again, sorry for the delayed reply.

Problem seems to be fixed after I replaced my charging adapter. However, it still disconnects sometime but it's very rare and I can deal with it.

I know this problem is an old one - but it still happens - and i know the solution.

I had to send my phone back to Sony, who didn't repair the problem. but eventually, i worked out that the phone was stopping charging when it received a notification or message. This made me wonder if it was something to do with the LED - that was in use for charging - and then was used by the message notification.

I located the setting that turns off the LED for text and message notifications. After that, the phone never had a problem charging.

it cost me £100 to send my phone back to Sony, because they refused to even consider repairing it until i paid to have some cosmetic damage fixed. Then they sent it back without addressing the charging problem! Anyway, the above is not a fix but it is a workaround that has been perfectly fine ever since i did it.
