My brothers system was the opposite it wouldn't see DVD but read CD's. We tried everything too. The only solution is to reformat your C drive. Go to Sony Link and download all the updates into a folder on D drive ready to install. Save all your favorites and connection settings to D drive and any pictures whatever you want to keep and reformat C drive with your recovery software. Get the windows updates first then install the Vaio updates. It sounds drastic but my brother and his friends are a programmers and if they can't get it working, no one can.
