More than 1gig of ram?

Hi,

Why do many of the Vaio laptops only take a maximum of 1gb ram, does anybody know? I can appreciate this being the case for the older models but I would have thought that the later models, like my FS215z for example, would be able to accept up to 2gb. I was just wondering if there is some reason for this.

Are you sure that they can only take 1gb because i just thought that that was the maximum sony would ship them with.Are you sure you can not upgrade too 2gb?

Hi febs,

According to the manual no, it says;

Memory Speed (MHz)333
Memory TypeDDR SDRAM PC2700
Max. Memory (MB) 1024

However I would be really interesting in hearing from anyone who has fitted more than 1gig to any model in the FS series

On here it says you can have up to 2gb of Random Access Memory

Sony, for some reason, have occasionally understated the maximum amount of memory that a given model can handle. Unfortunately this is not the case with the FS series ¿ the maximum amount of RAM that this can accept is 1024 MB. It ultimately depends on the architecture of the motherboard.

Sorry Webster i didnt realize you wanted it for the FS series i thought you just wanted to know if any VAIO could have more than 1gb.Im afraid i have had no experience with the FS series.

It seems odd doesn't it that Sony would market the FS215z as a "Ideal portable media centre" with an impressive 128mb Nvidia graphics card and a docking station with a plethora of media inputs and outputs but then limit the amount of ram to 1mb when, as we all know, working with video etc requires plenty of memory.

Go figure¿ Well done Sony!

Well I got a reply from Crucial (very quick) and it would seem that the FS series can indeed only handle 1gb of ram (2 x 512):smileysad: That said, with a gig of ram it does perform very well, it handles Dreamweaver & Photoshop CS2 with no problems and is certainly quicker than my friends P4 (3.06mhz)/ 1gb ram machine, but I still don't understand why Sony seem to 'hold back' the upgradability on some of the vaio range.

Ye it seems a bit odd to do so.They probably think that there machines are so good that you would not want to upgrade it

Quite right, and to be honest the FS215z with 1 GB is more than adequate, in fact it¿s very fast - I love it. I can only imagine that febs A417S must be blisteringly quick.:smileycool:

The only reason I can think is that Sony hasn`t memory modules over 512Mb, so 2x512=1024 max.
