are their any owners of the above laptop who have purchased an Apple i-pod (20gb with Colour Screen) I am thinking of buying one but need to know did you get it to work with the normal USB 1.1 port on the side of the vaio or did you have to purchase a USB 2 card to go in the PC card slot?

You'll need the USB2 port to be able to charge the iPod. So you'll have to find a USB2 card adaptor.

Hey there,

I don't use the combination of hardware that you are, however, the equipment you have at the moment will work (albeit at the much slower 11Mbps of USB 1.1).

Whilst this is fine and will also charge your iPod when connected, you will greatly benefit from using a USB 2.0 card which has a much greater throughput (on paper 480Mbps).
This is not compulsary, however.

Hi Chris

I am confused you told me that the i-pod will work with a USB 1.1 port but some websites that are selling the i-pod state that it is compatiable with USB 1.1 and some say that it wii ONLY work with USB 2 that is why I asked if anyone who has my model vaio and had bought a colour i-pod could let me know then I would know for sure weither or not I needed to buy a USB 2 PCI card. There must be other Vaio owners out there with the same model surely I'm not the only one that have purchased the i-pod that I am interested in who could solve this problem for me. I also need to know if the vaio PC card slot is a type I or II and if it is 16 bit or 32 as I believe these USB 2 cards will only work with a type II 32bit slot. Many thanks for trying to help me Chris I realise it must be difficult for you as you do not have the same model as myself.

With regards to charging using a dock, sadly this is nothing more than a glorified stand so no charging facility is available this way. You should find there is a power adaptor in the box, but if you are wanting to have it connected to the pc and charge (Assuming usb 1.1 wont power it) then you'll need separate cables.

In reply to the guy who has an iPod that wont charge: are you running the latest firmware and software for the iPod?

Will check with apple and then follow up on this post...

Sadly Apple's advice on this matter is limited they state that "in most cases" usb should charge the iPod. Based on what others have said it looks as though you should play it safe and use a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card. They claim that any usb port listed as 'high power' will charge the iPod, however, this (i believe) was something changed in the USB 2.0 spe. providing a greater voltage over the same cable. Apologies for any confusion caused - stick with the other guys advice of using USB 2.0 - sorry.

All I want to know is weather or not the Apple i-pod 20gb (colour version) will work when plugged into my USB 1.1 port BEFORE I purchase this item as I do not want to purchase a USB 2 card if I don't need to. There must be some PCG-V505BP owners out there who have purchased this i-pod and can give me this confirmation.

Are there any other PCG-V505BP owners out there? I can't be the only one surely

Yes it will work but

- It will be slow
- You can't charge it - you'll need to do that via mains before synching

USB2 card will solve it

Dear Kee-Lo

I have been informed by Sony that my PC Card slot is only a type I with 16bit the Apple i-pod needs a 32 bit to work if I purchase a PC USB 2 card and insert the i-pod into the slot on the USB 2 card will that mean the i-pod will then get the 32bit it needs to work?

No but I did get around this by buying a firewire hub from eXpansys - which is powered

The one I have has been discontinued, but this one will do the job too
