Change the HD of my Vaio

Hello everybody!
It's my first post here and this is a really important matter to me.

I bought my Vaio recently (FS215S) and I urgently need to change its hard drive. The current hard drive (4200 rpm) is very slow for the purpose I want it (music production which means multiple audio tracks(up to 100) running at once. So I want to install a new hard drive working at 7200 rpm. I was thinking of the Hitachi ones but I am worried about two things:

Will it be compatible with my Vaio?
How will I restore the operating system originally found in my Vaio if the new Hard drive is empty(I have created the recovery DVD's for my Vaio however I don't know if they will work in an empty hard drive.

Can you help me?This thing is very important for my job until I sort this out I cannot actually make use of my laptop:smileycry:

The HDD of the FS series is easily accessible from the bottom of the unit, its under one of the access hatches. You need to be very careful to avoid damaging the foil cable when you remove the old HDD.

The new HDD should work fine with the controller in the notebook, but keep in mind that the new HDD may consume more energy and produce more heat than the old HDD. So battery running time may decrease, and while it is not likely it is possible that the new harddisc produces too much heat.

Recoverying on a non-original HDD from the recovery discs should be no problem at all - but I would keep the original HDD's data intact until you are done with the recovery onto the new HDD, just in case.

PS: Be aware that should you damage anything or should anything break later as a consequence of this upgrade you can be certain that Sony will not bear the cost of repairing it.

It's more than likely it will produce more heat as it's turning at nearly double the speed of the old disk

I just wonder how will I be able to recover my operating system to a completely empty (no OS) hard disk.
Is there a specific way to do it? As far as I know the recover procedure is done within the Windows environment. Is there another way that I do not know?

Your CD is bootable, so don't worry about not having Windows on it innitially.

Just go into your BIOS and set the optical drive as the boot device.

Now my question is:
Should I just get a 7200rpm Firewire hard drive to avoid all the hassle or will this be worse than getting and installing a 7200 internal hard drive?

I have such a hard disk and I find it really handy, easy to share data amongst the two VAIOs I have.

If you use an external harddrive its speed will be rather irrelevant. USB Hi-speed is limited to a theoretical maximum of 60MB/s. The actual net transfer rate is lower though, and therefore the average harddrive should have no problem delivering that much throughput.

A 7200rpm HDD makes sense only when you use it as a system drive, so the added seek and transfer speed can improve your XP performance.

The recovery disc will work fine on an completely blank HDD.
