The CD will be spinning faster than the DVD. The noise is created mainly by spinning an intrinsically unbalanced 5 inch disc at thousands of RPM. Most drives have a certain amount of acoustic damping built into the mechanism but their effectiveness varies wildly.

High speed notebook type drives are usually the noisiest.

You can reduce the RPM and the vibration with Nero Drive Speed.

http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html#nerodrivespeed

Try using a different brand of disc.

I had the same problem with the CD player in my car - made a right racket whirring and clicking. That was using Verbatum discs but when I changed to Kodak discs the problem stopped.

I think Rob hit the nail on the head - unbalanced discs.

Yes. I have this problem too. And it's horrible. My complete VAIO begins to vibrate. I had this problem particularly with PC-magazin discs.

Yes I think a lot of it has to do with unbalanced discs, slightly bent can make them hit the tray.

Sorry I didn't quite understand your question diamond1

I have a vng - s4m with prob. it did my head in till i sorted it ! Put the roms that make the prob. on a flat surface , look at it as you push it flat . plob. roms are concave . bend it a little and prolem is no more. The dvd drive is so slim there is room for inperfect roms.
