CD/DVD Driver suddenly not working

My CD/DVD driver will suddenly not read software CD's or music CD's. I have checked the device's properties and it says that the device status is 'working properly' but clearly it is not. Has anyone got any ideas on what it could be before I take it in for possible repair?

Driver 6.1.7600.16385 (Microsoft). 21/06/2006.

On web forum they say an update conming out but can't find anywhere to download and not on Sony list. Bit stuffed with this out of action. . .

Contacted Sony Support (06/02/2011), hopefully they can source. . .

I'm going to try and replace my drive. Opened up the machine and took it out.

But it appears impossible to get a new one elsewhere. Used ones' on eBay very heavily priced too.

Let me know if you find a solution.
