Thanks for your reply's guys, I have already managed to wangle a second battery so I am getting about 2.5 to 3 hours use out of the machine at the moment (without my DVD though:smileysad:!)

Although this is a desktop chip which I understood at purchase the manual alludes to progressively slowing down the processor as the battery depletes. The slow down in performance is certainly noticeable when I am running on battery and particulalry when the battery is low.

Another aspect which has made me think that there is something going on with the processor is that no matter how warm the computer is and how much the old fan has been whirring away in the background, I notice a faster slowdown of the fan on battery than when on mains, and under same processor strain circumstances and conditions the computer will noticeable cool around the CPU area more rapidly if not connected to the mains.

I was wondering if there was a way to fool the computer into thinking it's running out of battery immediately upon switching from mains.

I do some really long train journeys and not every train has fitted main supply yet (Boo , Central Trains, Transpennine Express, Hooray Virgin!) So I am extremely keen to eek as much life as possible!

By the way I have seen fake batteries on Ebay for £30 any thoughts!

Martin

I am a bit of a road warrior - with a desktop replacement laptop which loves to steam through my battery reserves. I was hoping there might be a way to directly control the speed step device I have tried the speedswitchxp download on my computer which was advised elsewhere on this site, to no avail. FYI It didn't ratchet down at all no matter what power setting at left in on mains or battery.

Any Ideas?

Martin Dallaghan

You can't slow the speed - the 715M has a desktop processor (2.8Ghz). The best you can do is dim the screen, turn the volume down, and enable power saving on any devices that allow it.

You could install a second battery but that will hit you for about £175
