In that case it would seem that at normal startup there is either a driver missing or currupt or a service that for some reason is unable to start.

Troubleshooting can be time consuming but I suggest you start by trying a selective startup.

https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=11&ct=1346361049&rver=6.1.6206.0&wp=LBI_SSL&wreply=https:%2F%2Flogin.live.com:443%2Flogin.srf%3Fwa%3Dwsignin1.0%26rpsnv%3D11%26rver%3D6.1.6206.0%26wp%3DLBI_SSL%26wreply%3Dhttps%253a%252f%252fredir.windows.microsoft.com%252fliveid%253fru%253den-US%25252fwindows-vista%25252fRun-Selective-Startup-using-System-Configuration%26lc%3D1033%26id%3D285275%26cbcxt%3D%26mkt%3D&lc=1033&id=285275

Rich

Quick update..... Just before the microsoft screen starts to appear, a clicking noise comes out of the speaker!

Its not the hard drive cos I made sure before posting this.

One other thing, when everything is loaded, if you try to open one of the d/top icons, it only wants to open the bottom icon of the list!

If you then use the arrow keys to go up and highlight various other icons, it will then srat to work!

I think this laptop is possessed

Andy..

In that case I suspect that the system is working overtime after normal boot while trying to sort out a driver or service problem.

As suggested previously - try the selective startup troubleshooting procedure.

You could also have a look in Device Manager for any problem devices - they will have a yellow bang warning symbol .

Rich
