HELP PLEASE

Vaio update installed WinDVD BD 8.8.0.154 and it wouldn't play Blu Rays anymore (DVDs would play).

Sony support suggested that I uninstall the software and use Vaio recovery to install the original software but there was an error 505:41.

Reinstalling everything (including the OS) from scratch is not an option. Now I'm left with no DVD/BD software.

I'd like to get the previous version of the WinDVD software back (8.0-B20.185) can anyone help ???

Thanks,

Gary

PS System is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit

I think it's a compatibility problem with WinDVD and the Sony Blu-ray drive firmware (Vaio update had recently updated this too).

I downloaded a trial version of WinDVD 2010 Pro from (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/gb/en/Product/1208530085664#versionTabview=tab1&tabview=tab5).

It didn't work either, whenever I inserted a Blu Ray disc WinDVD Pro reported "media type not supported" but a downloaded trial of PowerDVD did work. So the good news is I can play Blu-ray discs again for 30 days, the bad news is it's going to cost me between £60 and £80 for a permanent fix for a problem CAUSED BY SONY !!! Particularly galling when I'm unemployed and can ill afford it.

Sony should build their update software with a roll-back/undo option or offer their customers a viable alternative to a complete system rebuild. Why can't the Vaio laptops come with a hardware decoder ? After all, they make stand-alone Blu-ray players !

For those of you who need a solution you can get PowerDVD from (http://www.cyberlink.com/store/powerdvd/buy_en_GB.html?gclid=CKLU4JOkn6gCFQoZ4Qodexn_HA)

Hello,

I would like to inform you that I have the exact same problems since WinDVD was updated this week to version 8.8.0.154. Last week I could play Blu-rays fine, without any problem or hick-ups, but since the update, and the change of the entire layout (the Corel logo is now featured for the first time), none of my Blu-rays appear to work.

I have a Vaio FZ21M, never had any problems playing back Blu-rays in its 3+ years, until this week...

When I insert a disc, it starts spinning and loading WinDVD as it used to. The splash screen appears, but instead of loading the disc, the drive stops spinning completely after several seconds. The splash screen stays idle and nothing happens. When inserting a DVD it starts playing automatically, as it should. I have tried several different typs of Blu-rays, from different movie studios, and none of them appear to work anymore.

It drove me crazy yesterday as I tried to revert back to the previous version without much luck. A windows system recovery to a previous state resulted in an error message of the older version of WinDVD as soon as I tried to start it up. I re-downloaded the update, but that didn't change much. Fortunately I looked around on the internet before complete deleting the application all together, because that would mean I would have to perform a full recovery, which is not something I am planning to do just for a simple error in Blu-ray playback.

The problem has to be a software problem, as I have installed a second Blu-ray playback application (Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 5) which I was hoping would solve the issue. But it shows a problem as well; when I insert a Blu-ray that automatically starts the movie without the optional language selection screens (e.g. some Warner Bros discs)...the application loads but the screen stays idle or frozen in the loading state. The disc however spins as it should do and I can hear the audio play back to me; but the video is in no way visible. This proofs that there is not a hardware issue with my drive, as the disc's audio can be played indicating that the drive can still read the Blu-ray properly. There seems to be, however, a problem with the video/graphics card of the system, which is unable to render the High Def Blu-ray image that comes from the drive. I never had any issues with this before the update, as stated, so I think there is a problem with the latest update of WinDVD.

I hope this issue gets looked into and a solution is offered soon. I am reluctant to fully format my hard drive just to get the old version of WinDVD back on my system, after which Vaio Update would keep advising me to update it, but I will see it as my very last resort.

I really hate it that my Vaio has since been useless in displaying Blu-ray discs as I used this option very often to watch movies late at night. Besides that, I have bought a laptop with Blu-ray playback capabilities, so it should be able to do that if I please!

I too have just downloaded the latest Vaio update for WinDVD BD. On completion, I found that the update had uninstalled my current version and replaced it with a new one (new desktop shortcut).

This new version does not work and I have been left with no BR disc player. When I try to start the player it say's that SQPlus.dll is missing.

I have tried Systen Restore to before the uninstall but this will not complete because it says it cannot access a file?

HELP! please

LATEST:

After many hours, I have found the missing SQPlus.dll. It was in my AVG virus vault. I have restored this using "Ignore" and managed to load and use the new WinDVD player but when I restart, AVG prevents it loading again saying there is a virus present.....hopefully not. Is there a fix for this?

Message was edited by: mazurkal

Hi everyone!

Many thanks for warning us of the problems of "upgrading" the WinDVD BD. I was tempted to do it but I've had many problems when upgrading the Vaio Care from 6.3 to 6.4. One lesson I've learned is do not uninstall the previous version of any Vaio product as I wrongly did with the mentioned program and the Vaio Event Service. Another one is do not upgrade any Vaio stuff before consulting this forum. The story is very long but I resolve the problem by using the Windows Restore System and Vaio Revovery Center and I have the modest 5.0 of Vaio care but I did not use the recovery system, thus, deleting everything that I have installed in my F11 since April 10.

This has happened to me as well amongst several of the many re-installs I performed over the course of a few days. AVG scans the file SQPlus.dll as a threat and, depending on which option you choose, stores it in its virus vault. I researched the file online and found out it couldn't do any harm, so I hit ignore. Starting the WinDVD application afterwards worked fine, but once every now and then AVG acts up again, wanting to move the SQPlus.dll file into quarantine..

My question to you however is if after you managed to start up WinDVD properly, were you able to play Blu-rays? I wasn't, even after I could succesfully start-up the application.

I really hope Sony, or Corel, is able to come up with a solution to this problem soon. In the mean time I must enjoy my Blu-rays through my PS3 🙂

This might be a problem with AVG viruschecker (Mis?) identifying the SQPlus/dll file of the update as a virus. My computer (also a VGN_FZ21M, Vista sp2) throws up an AVG warning notice immediately after inserting any BD disk into the machine, followed by an application error popping up. Are others of you finding the same problem? are we all running AVG, or does the problem occur regardless?:smileyconfused:

Hi Dajenni,

Not in my case, my AV software is Norton Internet Security 2011 and it's not running in silent mode so all threats are reported twice, once when they're found and again in a monthly report. The only threats removed in the last couple of months are tracking cookies and they all check-out.

No, I think you're barking up the wrong tree, I still think it's a bug in the WinDVD update. I've had other experience of Sony software causing problems like wiping clean my iTunes database.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2715

The solution was to uninstall the offending Sony software.

Gary

oh the other thing that seems to make windvd bd work is setting your laptops date back before the vaio update. i set mine to dec 2010 it seems the aacs still work for that date.

my laptop displays the wrong date but at least i can use my blu rays again

Dear All,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but after many, many emails to Sony they've totally denied responsibility for the problems caused by their update to WinDVD for Vaio (and their poor advice to uninstall WinDVD before trying to reinstate the original version using the Vaio Recovery Center).

Sony customer support insist that a total system rebuild is the only solution they can offer. They are not interested that this is not practicle because of the hours/days it would take to restore all my other software, updates/upgrades and data files (which are not affected by this problem).

I've disabled the Vaio update software to try to ensure the integrity of my system and will be very reluctant to trust updates from Sony ever again.

I guess that I'll have to purchase PowerDVD once the the 30-day trial is over if I ever want to watch Blu-ray discs on my Vaio again.

All I can say in summary is... Sony, I'm very unhappy about your poor support on this occasion.

Regards,

Gary

PS. The standard of English from Sony support operatives is very poor (see attached).

I have a Sony TV, laptop, Camera, Video recorder..love the brand because everything just does as it should......just get it sorted.

Hi All!

Same problem here, installed the update through Vaio Update and now my Vaio won't play Blu Rays anymore! WinDVD starts and then nothing I can't click on any of the menus either. It's not AVG because I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials. Come on Sony just give us a update to sort this out, it's not like we're asking for something free, just for the hardware and software that we paid for to work! I've got a VGN-FW21M...

A quick update:

Following my last post, I retrieved the affected file from the virus vault, where it had (again) been placed by AVG. I set up an exception on the Resident Shield. I then found it was possible to watch Blu-rays by . I also sent the affected file to AVG for analysis, and it appears that one of the latest updates has removed the problem, and I have now removed the exception.

If you have the same problem, updating the AVG database, and moving the affected file (SQPlus.dll) back from the virus valt should work.

From what I read, others seem to have other, more serious and fundamental problems with this update, I hope this might help some of you, or at least give some clues!

Hello all,

Does anyone have an update on this?

My situation is similar to all of yours: Ever since I installed the update my Blu Ray drive has just stopped working, and refuses to play Blu Rays, whatever program I try to use (DVDs play fine).

I have phoned Vaio support and they told me to do a load of things I'd already tried (reinstalling the firmware/WinDVD BD, uninstalling and reinstalling the disk drive etc). To be quite honest I'd rather not fork out for another call to them, so am waiting for a solution to appear on the net, any help would be hugely appreciated!

My laptop's a VGN-FW31J running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

Blu Ray Drive is a Matshita BD-CMB UJ130AS.

I suppose it's also worth mentioning that I am a UK user.

Many thanks in advance!
