I ......... this is taking literally hours (8 hours and counting) for the transfer of around 100 tracks - should this be the case or is this a fault? There seems to be no way for stopping or closing the Vaio down once its updating.

8 hours !!!! no way - this process should only take a couple of minutes...
It's only updating the hard drive file structure at this stage.
Unless there is a problem I'm not aware of with WAV files I would suggest a hard reset via the little hole in the base of the VP.

I think your VP has crashed ... think what would you do with a pc that was behaving like this ?

The reset will reboot the software and reinitialise the processor - it shouldn't affect any files on the VP.
If you are effectively locked out it may be your only option.
Maybe try something a bit less adventurous, like just copying a CD into SS ond onto the VP to see how long the update takes.

Hope this helps.

I have recently purchased a 40Gb Vaio pocket and am transferring WAV files to the player using the Music Transfer software - transferring as ATRAC3plus 256kbs. Once i've done the transfer the Vaio goes into "updating music files" mode and this is taking literally hours (8 hours and counting) for the transfer of around 100 tracks - should this be the case or is this a fault? There seems to be no way for stopping or closing the Vaio down once its updating.

I'm using the most up-to-date firmware, and versions of Viao Music ransfer and have loaded latest version of SonicStage.

Would really appreciate any thoughts/suggestions as to whether this is normal and if not, how I shut the Vaio down.

Thanks
