Battery life of vaio pocket 40gb

Hi all i just got a brand new vaio pocket 40gb from ebay recently, I find it very easy to use & am very impressed with it, However...... the battery life (20hrs) doesnt seem too acurate to my model ( about 10 hrs is closer..!) ive only charged twice so far, (6 hours or so each time)& thats the only times ive put loads of music on to it, After finishing the full charge both times, the battery has run down purely from (portable with headphones use),it will play quite a lot at full charge, then drops from 3 quarters charge to 1 quarter charge very quickly sometimes within an hour or so,,, then it lasts a while like that,. is this normal? does it happen to other peeps too? i now read that replacement batteries are not an option either..???? i read that you can do a quick top up charge, but had previously understood that doing so reduces battery memory / life,, ....Page 27 of instructions of course states (the numbers given for remaining battery capacity are only approximate, and that it depends on uses, number of charges, and other various factors) HMMM crafty sony.....

Hi,

please ensure that everything is allright with your battery. Contact your local dealer.

You should know that Sony has released a new firmware which displays the clock on the remote control and when you plug your Vaio Pocket onto your docking station. If you got this firmware your battery pulls a lot of energy even when you fully turn of your Vaio Pocket for the clock functions. This is a known bug and before Sony updated the firmware I recieved at least 20 hours of playback time. Now I have to reload the battery every few days, otherwise all my settings will got lost.

Not downloaded any firmware (yet) so thats no excuse, i shall try charging a couple more times & monitor the hours of usage in detail before i complain to sony,,. ...starting to wish id gone for the 20gb hd5.:smileysad:

Sony have calculated battery life on mininum usage. Battery life is reduced by:

Higher bitrate of tracks
Higher volume
Usage of backlight
Playing mp3 tracks (not ATRAC)
Having more tracks on HDD

I think you should realise that 20 Hrs is a MAXIMUM and does indeed depend on ¿various factors¿ such as how often the screen is activated, the volume, how much searching you do of the hard drive and even the ambient temperature.
The charge cycle will be longer than 6 hours if the VP is in use whilst being charged.
Leave it overnight or until it says¿ charging complete¿
Don¿t put too much faith in the battery charge indicator as it is only a guide and it¿s quite normal for the battery indicator to go from full to 3 quarter quickly and then stay there for a while. . Having said that , going down to one quarter within the hour does seem unusual. You may have a dodgy battery, (which by the way is replaceable reasonably easily).
Lithium Ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, so don¿t be too scared to just do a top up¿ charge

On chargin my battery last night ,after 7 hrs or so, where it says (charging) on the screen there appeared a red cross on the screen with the message, (charging error)..???? after a while i placed it on charge again, and after a while was told (charging complete),, is this a common thing?,, my bitrate of mp3's (before conversion) is mostly 192,, im closely monitoring my use after this charge and so far have done 3 hrs & still have full battery sign, *fingers are crossed* ....

Hooray ..seems to be charging ok now,, and i got nearly 19 hours from the last battery charge!! oh vaio how could i ever have doubted you.... mmmmmmmm me love a lot!:smileyhappy:
