incorrect length shown in a video file

hello. i have this mpeg video file which is 15 mins long but when i play it in windows media player it shows it as 1min in length.i cannot play the video properly because it shows the incorrect length of the video file.
If i play the video file on a different computer it works fine....

please help me rectify this. cheers

Sounds like the file might be corrupt after 1min, are you using the same media player on the other machine ?

yes, same media player on the other machine. i tried other programs but it still shows 1min. should i reinstall my windows media player??

If you used multiple media player programs on the problem machine and they all exhibited the same problem then I would hazard a a guess that your problem is with the codec.

Removing and re-installing video codecs is a pain! You can find info at the Microsoft Windows support site.

pls help me. im not sure what to do next. how do i remove the codecs? if i reinstall windows media player will it fix the problem?

ok, ill wait for windows media player 9 to get released. it's gonna be releases on january 7 :smileygrin: i will install it then. ill u know how it goes on. if it doesnt work what else shall i try??

Yes, its out tomorow - wonder if it will be any good.
If all fails, I'd try and find an mpeg codec.

I have been using the WMP 9.0 beta for a couple of months now without problems. I used it to create an autoplaying CD, - ( not a VCD or SVCD, as the recipient, my Niece in the USA, has no idea how to play them, or even which media players are on their PC ) I burned an Mpeg-1, a copy of WMP 9.0 beta, and a .inf file instructing WMP to launch in full-screen and to play the file, onto a CD for her to play on the PC.
Quality playing Mpeg-1 files is particularly good with this version of WMP

Kee-Lo, You can make an "autorun" CD by including a copy of Windows
Mplayer2.exe, the Mpeg file you wish to play and the proper
"autorun" inf file. The Mplayer2.exe is
only a 5K file. When you are done, the disc should load and run
in a windows computer that has it's CDROM drive set for "auto
insert notification" . (Pay attention to the syntax)

Burn a normal "data" CD with the following files in the root of
it.

Mplayer2.exe
autorun.inf
yourvideo.asf

You should be able to find Mplayer2.exe in your windows folder
(do a search for it) and right click, drag, drop and copy

The autorun.inf should look like this:

[autorun]
open=mplayer2.exe /play /close /fullscreen \yourfile.mpg

Use notepad or some other ascii editor to create the autorun.inf
file just as above. Save it as autorun.inf. Then burn it along
with Mplayer2.exe and your video (yourfile.mpg) to the root
directory of the CD. Those parameters will cause it to
autostart, play the video at full screen and then close it at
finish.

nope, still shows the incorrect duration. it works properly on my other laptop, any ideas on how to reinstall the mpeg codecs or fix this problem. i dont want to have to reinstall the whole of windows xp.

p.s. this only happens on certain .mpg video files
