I have an AR series laptop that I have had for a year. Before christams I was struggling to install Vista SP 2 successfully, so I disabled windows updates. Yesterday I decided to turn the updates back on. After about 2 hours of saying it was installing 'update x of 22', it crashed and restarted. However, now it can not repair itself. I need to at least try and rescue the data as it is family photos etc. I have tried to use the Vaio data recuse utility but it failed.

Any suggestions?

Two possible options.
1) Boot into safe mode (tap F8 during boot) and use system restore.
2) Boot into safe mode and uninstall any windows update installed (or part installed) on the date the problem occurred.

Good luck.
