Upgrading Hardisk

Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade the hardisk of my FS115S but im not exactly sure what hardisk would be suitable.

All i know is il need a SATA hardisk, (i think) and i would like a faster speed disk than 4200, preferable 7200rpm like this below

Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Also i'd like to be able to directly transfer all the data from my current hardisk to this new one including way my current HD is partioned for recovery etc etc,

How would i go about doing this?

Hi Ali,

According to the specifications of your FS115S, you do not have a SATA hard drive.

You need a (P) ATA drive. The Travelstar 7K100 you have highlighted in the link is an ATA Parallel drive and will fit your Vaio OK. This is a very good drive you have chosen.

The most reliable method of transferring an image of your present system partition to a new drive that I have found to date is Acronis True Image. It is not fool proof but with a little work it does save a huge amount of time.

You will need either a considerable free space on your current fixed drive or a removable drive to store the image. Assuming the former (once you have created the image) you will then also need a USB enclosure (caddy) to access the new drive.

First install the new drive in the USB enclosure and if necessary format the drive and allocate a drive letter. Then follow the instructions in Acronis True image for ‘recovery’.

After the recovery process has completed install the new hard drive in your notebook and, as a bonus, you can use the old hard dive in the USB caddy as an external drive.

Thanks for your replys guys!

So if i use to Acronis true image to do this Rich, will i be able to insert it into my laptop and then continue as normal or will i have to reinstall windows, and/or reformat so it is recognised as my C:/ drive?

Also what do you mean by considerable? for example at the moment i have an 8OGB drive partioned into two with around 20GB space free in total.

Ok great, thats pretty much it except for one thing, which is i dont even know if my computer's bios supports 100gb drives.

And could someone talk me through the process of upgrading. Start with creating the image, and then actually taking out my old drive and replacing it with the new one.

Also i checked on Vaio-link and in device manager and it says may harddrive interface is IDE, is this the same as ATA-100?
