Crash possibility + Reset Button

OK,

I was reading through the threads and so that there was confusion as to who said Sony withdrew the AP1 due to crashes and reliability issues. .....

Before I bought my Vaio pocket (very pleased with BTW) I researched it as much as possible on the net etc. I compared it to iPod, iPod photo, HD5 etc etc and the reason I bought the Vaio was because my Sony DSC-Cybershot (P100) camera could dump photos direct to it without a PC. This will be of massive use whils't on honeymoon in the far east in September. Do you think the future wife would take kindly to the Vaio VGN-FS195VP coming along for the ride !!!??? I think not.
I did not want to spend loads on additional memory sticks for the Cybershot so the VP was my saviour.

I rang a "Sony Centre" in the UK and asked if they had them in stock. I was told that they had been discontinued due to reliability issues. They were prone to frequent crashes with potential for subsequent data loss. Ond of story, it was one guy in one Sony centre who told me that. I was advised that the HD5 would be a good buy, but hey, you need your PC to store photos on it.

You can buy an adapter for the iPod photo apparentl;y which will let you transfer phtoos directly from camera, but the photos are changed to fit the screen. This is no good because I want to upload them all to my PC for printing / editing etc when I get back to the UK.

I am pretty used to the full functionality of the VP now and it has so far proven itself .....

1) Sexy and generally physically robust.
2) To have a slightly slower (but fine by me) than expected disk OS / disk seek time.
3) Very useable user interface.
4) to be a replacement for all my CD's at home. I just plug it into it's station on the sideboard at home and the CD clutter has gone.
5) Be exactly what I wantedfor photo storage.

It has not crashed so far.

Sorry for the lenght of post BTW !!!

One final question - if you use the reset button, I assume it does not destroy data - only a disk format would do that ?

No ¿ pressing the reset just resets the processor and re-boots the software. It has no effect on the data held on the hard drive.

I¿m glad that you are pleased with your VP. I wholeheartedly agree with your points 1 to 5 (by the way point 2 will improve if you do the firmware update). If you¿ve already done it ¿ that¿s as fast as it gets I¿m afraid LOL

I am still a bit blown away by just how good the VP is. I have had friends immediately just go out and buy a VP the same day they saw and heard mine.

I despair at the hype surrounding the iPod. My personal opinion is that it is a fashion accessory for the misinformed rather than a serious tool for music lovers.

Long Live the VP ¿ (now discontinued¿¿. possibly !)

When you transfer photos to the iPod photo using the adapter, they are not altered but they are not viewable either. The only time the photos are altered is when they are synced back to the iPod from your computer.

Just resetting the processor and rebooting software /OS is good to know. I'm gonna put it through it's paces in the next couple of months so I go on hoilday with confidence that if it needs a reboot, all is fine afterwards.

As far as the iPod photo goes - don't want to tread on anybodies toes - again, just going off the sales person's (at Selfridges) advice !! I'm sure it meets the requirements of the user base it's aimed at, just not mine.

Also interested to read today about the Toshiba Gigapocket which looks like a direct iPod / iPod photo rival. Looks pretty sleekly designed.

Also, i think "Apacer" < I think that's the brand > are about to release a device which accepts data dump from any USB device. Looks interesting, but no colour display.

The colour display is great on the VP, but if only you could browse photos by thumbnail etc. It really is the only other thing to add that would make this juyst perfect. I don't care about video - my hotel room will have a TV if I get that bored !! lol !!!!
🐵

Afraid I did the formware upgrade, so auxiliary storage seek / access time is as god as it's going to get LOL, but hey, I can live with that.

Loving my machine even more now I have a case for it.

LOL, forgot to add that I'm getting 'pissed' at the camera I love - the DSC-P100 5.1 megapixel Sony beauty I hold close to my heart.......

All because it works at USB v1 .....

Now if I could only get those photos to dump across to the VP a bit quicker .....

Oh, yeah - I have to save for a wedding .................
