i wouldnt say that the k series is totally defective but there is certainly problems with it ... i recently purchased the PCG-K115B and and didnt have any problems at first but then the DVD-R CD-RW drive started to play up and now all it will do is play things ... not amused ... sony needs to sort it out

Well, i never had any problames with my PCG K115Z Series.
I think its the best Laptop ever.

Nothing severely wrong with mine either. Your laptop will almost certainly still be under warranty so send it off, if there's a problem it will be repaired for free.
By the way it's quite rare for only the recording function of a drive to go bust when reading doesn't, it's usually both or neither. Take a look at your settings.
