Loss of personal settings on Sony Vaio Laptop

Hi all,
is this a Windows XPH problem or has anyone else experienced this?
Every few weeks it suddenly switches back to the default Viao stuff on startup or reawaken and all my own settings disappear.
Thanks for any ideas.
