Memory Question on - VGN A117s

Hi,

I have the VGN 117S, I currently have the standard 512meg, 2 banks of 256meg. This laptop def needs extra memory to run optimally. I understand Sony advise that you can only run max of 1gig, however the same laptop in America A190 are able to run upto 2 gig.

I would rather purchase a 1 gig module rather that a 512meg one, Crucial have this one:
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/MPartspecs.Asp?mtbpoid=70AB5CDEA5CA7304&WSMD=VAIO+VGN%2DA190&WSPN=CT...

I am just wondering if anyone has either used this memory module in their Sony A series or have got more then 1gig.

Thanks

Take a look around Vaio Village Forum you may want to ask there. Bear in mind that American Vaios can be customised so it may be because of that that they can put 2Gb in.
As I say, ask. But if Sony here say it can't be done then unless you are a compulsive risk-taker I'd be inclined to believe them.

got the same vaio as you have, want also to upgrade it, but I think it's better to do it first with 2 x512 by kingston or crucial. And let's see, maybe we first don't need 2 x 1G.I'm carefull with this notebook because it's very new and I don't want to destroy something the first months. I will do the upgrade within 2 months, just wait for others opinion how it works. Please stay tuned about this one....

Putting more memory than 1gig will not damage the computer in anyway, the most that would happen is that it wouldn't boot, all I can imagine Sony has done is Bios locked it, but I don't think they have.

I will get a 1gig stick and let you know

Are you sure putting the wrong RAM in can't damage anything? I'm pretty sure it's a possibility.

Tyger, from what I remember someone saying it might smell funny...

Well I went ahead and bought the 1gig sdo chip from crucial that was compatible with the a190....Pleased to say it worked perfectly, tried all sorts of apps and games, runs far faster..

At the moment I have 1.25gig, will get another 1gig dimm next month to make it 2gig.

So basically if anyone wants to extend above the 1gig you are able to and Crucial memory for the a190 series works perfectly.
