Motherboard query

Hello,

My sister's Vaio VGN-FS285B has died and I'm pretty certain that the motherboard has popped. Unfortunately due to Sony's stingy warranties, the machine is now out of warranty. What I'm wondering is if Sony ship individual components, if they do then how much they might be (roughly), if not then a very rough idea as to how much Sony might charge for a replacement of the motherboard.

Just trying to work out if it's economical to have the laptop repaired or not seeing as spec wise, it's probably only worth about £350-£400 (new) at the moment. Does anyone have any rough ideas. Not looking for exact prices or anything.

Personally, I would not bother

When I get laptops like this in RMA with dead boards, its almost 99% BER (beyond economical repair)
The boards cost us usually around the 150-250 mark and this is only because we have a deal with a parts dealer. This almost rarely goes ahead unless the customer wants only that laptop back because its somewhat sentimental (don't ask but it happens!)

as you said yourself, the laptop now is probably worth the same value now. Have a look on ebay too, you might find a deal there butits unlikely that would find the exact board on there... and then theres warranty issues whether the boards had any "trauma" in the past. with that 150/250 we pay, it is covered for a year warranty which sometimes makes it worth it but I still think it is way too much to pay.
