USB Power??

Hi there.

A new problem ahead!

I know that USB 2.0 can supply power for external devices.

I just bought an external harddisk, which can be powered via USB.

Connecting it to my VGN a 115Z does not seem to power it. I have to use the adaptor of the drive.

Is there anything that de-activates the power supply?? Or does a Laptop simply not power via USB??

Greetz,

Sven

There is a chance that the hard disk is not being supplied with enough current from the USB connection. If the device tries to draw more than 500mA then it will not work and you will have to use the drives external power supply.

You should be able to see more information if you go to System properties - hardware and look at the power tab of the properties box of your USB Root hub

In my opinion you're best using the external power supply which comes with the drive as if the USB port looses power you can loose data.
