cannot connect sony arc s device using pc companion

Hi there!
I have this problem where I cannot connect my xperia arc s (I know it's has this old android version, 2.4.. gingerbread) to the pc. At first, it (pc companion) cannot detect the phone but when I tried to change the option to "msc" it detects the device. Then, Pc companion ask me to scroll down the status bar on the phone and press "connect" but what's crazy about it is that theres no notification/activation on letting me connect the phone to the pc. i guess due to the android version? Tried to upgrade to the official ice cream sandwich version but it wont let you unless you have connected you phone to the pc. Can somebody help me? You're replies are really appreciated

Your phone should be in MTP mode and do you or have you rooted your device or do you have USB debugging turned on?

Hi Thommo, and yes, i have my usb debugging turned on and I haven't yet rooted the phone yet because I believed that it needs pc connection. I tried MTP mode but it wont detect the phone

Turn USB debugging off
