Hi all,
I just got a laptop, so this was the first time I could connect my Xperia S to the computer using the PC companion software.
Now I'm trying to update to the lastest software, but I get stuck at this stage:

I follow the instructions exactly, but at the last stage, where I plug the USB while holding the button, nothing happens. The phone remains off and the PC companion doesnt seem to advance to the next part, "updating". I'm just stuck in the "prepare" stage.
Please help.
Thank you in advance.
You said it my friend.I have seen since long ago people having troubles with W8.Moderators said to download Pc companion from sony official support and then the drivers will be installed.
Of course, this is what i did, where else to download it from?
However, it says its compatible with Win8...
anyway, not a satisfied customer
Any other suggestions for what I could do next??!
PS: Thank you very much for taking your time for this. ❤️
I have the exact problem as you. W8 and xperia s didn't update and stuck on volume... Meaby some help from Sony ?
My Windows 8 doesnt have any problem while connecting with XS and infact I updated using that and i didnt have any problem.
There is the option of installing PC companion directly from the phone while connecting through USB.Yes,not everybody has the W8 problems.I know it is a desperate step, but in the past people reinstalled windows and the phone could be connected.
Could it be an administrator permission problem for W8?
Hey there,
I've got the exact same problem you've got. The only difference is that you are using Windows 8, I'm running on Windows 7. It isn't a problem with Windows 8. If you figured out allready what the problem is and how to solve this please share it with us. I will most probable go to the shop I bought my phone. Hopefully they know how to solve this.
If you are stuck at the connection phase try this: Connect the phone whilst holding the volume button and wait till you get the green notification light, and then follow the steps below to reinstall the device:
To solve the issue, open Device Manager on your computer to reinstall the driver for your device while your device is connected with your PC via a USB cable.
Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 users
To open Device manager on your computer
Click on the Start button.
In the Search box, type device manager, and then press enter. You should see something similar to the below example.
Microsoft Windows 8 users
Method 1
To open Device manager on your computer
Click Windows Key + X to open the Start Menu.
Select Device Manager from the Start Menu.
Method 2
To open Device manager on your computer
Click the Desktop Tile to open the Desktop.
Click >> at the bottom right of the taskbar.
Select Control Panel from the Menu.
Select Device Manager from the list of control panel items.
Note: If you do not see the screen with the Device Manager option, click the View by drop-down menu and select Small icons.
Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 users
To open Device manager on your computer
On the desktop, right-click on My Computer and click Properties.
In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
In the Hardware, tab click the Device Manager button.
To reinstall the drivers for your device
Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers (USB section) of the Device Manager window.
Look for an MTP Device: Media Device, Unknown Device or any other reference to your phone. Click on this entry and choose "Uninstall" whilst leaving the device connected.
Wait a few minutes, and the computer will reinstall the drivers for the device.
Now, the phone is accessible via Computer/My Computer on your computer.
