need help with password change for email

I've just changed the passwords on my email server.

When I tried to update the info on my X10, I was able to change the password on the incoming settings with no problem at all, but outgoing will not accept the change.

When I type in the new pw and tap "next", the phone tries to communicate with the server, and times out. When I go back into the settings, the number of characters in the password field matches the old pw.

Anybody got any ideas?

I'd really rather not delete the account and redo everything because this email account handles quite a high volume of mail, and as I recall, when I set it up originally, the phone downloaded EVERY email on the server, and then erased them from the server. It no longer erases them, but it would take a very long time for me to delete all of the current emails if they arrived on the phone all at the same time.

This is no more than a wild guess, but have you tried going to Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage applications - Email - Clear cache?

yes, have tried that.

interwebs indicate that more than one person is having this issue.

Odd though, considering that I had no problem at all with the initial setup...

I think you will have to delete the account and redo settings.

Have now done that.

Incoming settings go with no problems at all.

Outgoing still yields a server connection error.

Have you checked your Port number with your email provider because this is the normal culprit.

The other thing I might suggest is to try a third party email app from the market.  I use K-9 which people either love (me) or hate.  I have also heard good things about MailDroid.
