I noticed your post hasn't been answered so I'm here to help you.
It is not possible to do this on the handset as standard. However I would recommend installing an application called Handcent SMS from the Android Market. If you tap and hold the picture in the MMS message in this application, you will get the option to save the image to your handset. I hope this helps.
