Xperia Arc Text Message Length

Xperia Arc Text Message Length

I'm with Rogers (and I have already checked with them, they say it's the phone and not the service) and I have a problem sending texts over 480 characters long. The problem is that they wont get sent and I get a message saying "Could not send". Is this something that can be fixed?

The funny part is that i can receive very long messages from others without them being split up into several separate smaller messages.

There are ways around it, but most likely there are some info missing in your APN

double check if  you have all this

For Internet Access/3G
Name Rogers
APN internet.com
Username wapuser1
Password wap
MCC 302 (should already be filled in)
MNC either 720 or 72 depending on your SIM card (should already be filled in)
Everything else should be blank. Now press your menu button and save.

For MMS
Name Rogers MMS
APN media.com
Username media
Password mda01
Server 172.25.0.107
MMSC http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy 10.128.1.69
MMS Port 80
MCC 302 (should already be filled in)
MNC either 720 or 72 depending on your SIM card (should already be filled in)
APN Type mms

Just posted a similar answer on another thread but not heard back to see if it helps at all so I will say the same here.... you never know!  The stock app auto converts long texts (3+) to MMS and there is no setting to change this however if you use an app like Handcent you can change or disable the auto convert length and keep long texts as SMS.  I use this as I have free texts but not free MMS and wonder if it is the conversion that is causing you the problem.

So I forgot my account info for stir, but it's me I promise! Thanks for the replies.

I tried what you guys suggested, regarding the APN my info is setup as...

Name: Rogers Internet
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720

Type: default,mms,supl

Which includes both internet an MMS

And regarding handcent, I installed it and changed the settings so that my text don't get converted to MMS (even though I have MMS). I feel like I have a higher probability of sending out longer texts using this app, but sometimes I have issues and have to attempt resending several times (could be signal strength???).

Can you try the following and let me know what happens,

Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > GSM Only.

let me know if you are able to send long sms after this.

Here's the thing with doing that. Since my phone is a Rogers branded phone, some of the settings aren't accessible and that's one of them. The only way I could get to it is if I flash the phone Neutral_Face And since I just picked it up recently I would prefer to explore other options first.

not quite, you can use another SIM card then enter a code to unlock your phone, I'll look into it but I know if you unlock your phone you will have access to everything

not all operators support long sms messages. It is an option which operators have to switch-on on the smsc. maybe \rogers is not offdering this service. normal lenght is 164

I called Rogers again last night. They told me they have been eperiencing issues with the network recently... but my problem started before that anyways.

I asked them about the length of sms, they essentially told me they can't guarantee anything over 160 characters (although longer messages should be going through) but besides that they see no problem from their end and told me that all the messages I sent are shown as being delivered.

Today has been good though. So far I haven't had any problems sending sms. For now I'll keep monitoring it and will post any updates, I would just want to know if this is a phone thing or a service issue.

I have an interesting update for those willing to read... I have discovered the cause of this problem...

Upgrading to gingerbread 2.3.3

After my last post on this forum I still had the same issue where my messages wouldn't send. I got fed up and went to the Rogers store to exchange the phone. After proving that something was wrong with mine they agreed to give me a new one. The first thing I did was send several large messages to a couple of people. The messages went through no problem (the recipients confirmed), my phone worked and I was finally 100% satisfied with my arc. Then I upgraded to 2.3.3... and now I'm experiencing the same issue Neutral_Face

I hope the next upgrade fixes this problem.
