Is my phone network locked?

just got the phone brand new and wanted to get it ready for travel by unlocking it but came across this

'In order to check if your handset can be unlocked you need to type *#*#7378423#*#* into your phones handset when your phone is on and working, select ServiceInfo and then select Simlock. You will see an option for 'Network' and on the left to it maybe a [x] or [o] but on the right is a value and if it is a 0 it cannot be unlocked.'

so I checked and sure enough, it shows 0

is this normal? should I still continue buying the unlock code or am I out of luck?

This will happen if you have entered the incorrect code 5 times, you should contact your Local support, there might be able to reset the count so you can buy/get the code from your carrier and enter it.

Hi @paulad,

If the phone is locked to a specific network you should see a "[x]" to the left in the service menu that you mentioned. If you instead see "[ ]" it should not be locked to a specific network as far as I know, even if a "0" is displayed to the right.

ahhh thats is interesting. I've uploaded a screen shot of what it looks like

again, this is what it shows right out of the box bought brand new

tried putting in a sim card from another provider and it did ask for unlock code to be inputted

I'll be trying a sim card from original provider after I post this and see if there is any other changes

ok got it

need to insert sim from original provider first

now shows [x] Network: Retries: 10

putting in another providers sim did not lock it to that provider as I hoped, still have to get unlock code

 i have an xperia L and this shows for me research on the net says it's unlocked but when i try with my talkmobile contract sim it says there's no sim network but it detects the sim inside just wondering if this is accually unlocked and what i can do if it is.
