Sorry to hear about this, there should be no reason as to why this has started, other than maybe an issue with the software update installation.
I would first suggest backing up the contacts to a PC/Mac and a SIM/SD card. Once done I then suggest clearing the Contacts application data, restarting the handset and then seeing if the issue has been resolved.
Apps > Settings > Apps > Contacts > Storage > Clear Data.
