hx9v - Orange tinges?? :(

Hi I wonder if anyone can help? I have recently bought a hx9v because i wanted a decent camera to take on holiday with me! Having played about with it at home i find that some pictures have a slight orange tinge to them, especially on blonde hair. I have no real experience with photograhy only really the point and shoot kind. Any tips would be greatly appreciated... Thank you

Hello sammyedmonds - Welcome to the Sony Forums

Is this orange tinge occuring in all of the shooting modes on the camera? There is various settings which can affect the colour and white balance which are described in the manual starting on page 20 which can be found here if you do not have the original to hand:

http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4275583141.pdf

In particular, have a look at scene selection to start off with and you will also see that it is possible to set up 'Scene Recognition' which will try and choose the best settings automatically. Experimenting with these settings may eliminate the problem that you are describing.

Thanks,

Simon

Another reason can be the flash being switched off, if you're shooting indoors.

Artificial lighting with the flash off (or with the flash covered with a finger!) will often give you an orange cast. If you set your camera to Fill (forced) flash indoors you should overcome any orangey colouring on your subject without spoiling the light balance for the rest of the scene.

Cheers

Mick

Thank you for your reply Simon  I will definitely try using the scene recognition. Im going to have another little play around with it tonight and see if i can find it... I have got the the manual but i dont find it describes the settings and what they do in enough detail, for someone who doesnt know much about cameras. Starting to think i should have bought one that is a bit simpler. But im sure the more i use it the better i get lol with a bit of hope!... Thanks again

Thank you for your message Mick  I have tried both having the flash on and off and have also been careful to not have my finger in the way! lol But still have this annoying tinge. It only really seems to be on my wooden furniture and fair hair, the rest of the photo seems fine...

Thanks again

hi sam,

i also recently bought the camera and i too have noticed the same orange tinge on fair hair at times though for me it seems to appear more when the subject is up relatively close and in poorer ambient lighting. like you i have also not mastered all the settings of the camera (been using mostly the auto modes at the mo.) so i think it may be about learning all its features and parametres to get the most out of it and to get the exact shot you want.

all the best
