SD card 'disappears' when connecting via USB to PC

I have just got my Xperia X8, it has a 2GB SD card installed. Under the "SD card & phone storage settings" it shows 1.8 GB under "Total Space" when the phone is not connected to a PC/USB. As soon as I connect the phone to my PC using USB the status of the SD Card shows "Unavailable" both under "Total Space" and "Available Space". What am I doing wrong?

I have tried removing and re-inserting the SD Card.

Also the PC's File Browser shows the drive as a CD Drive (G:) but when you try and open it says "Please insert a disk into drive G"

When you connect the SD card to the PC and mount it, it becomes part of the PC as an external drive and therefore not part of the phone, so yes perfectly normal for the phone not to 'see' it during this proceedure.  Once you disconnect it becomes part of your phone again and the phone can see it and give you the details in the Storage section you were looking at.

Sorry forgot the second part of the query, first you need to drag down your notification bar and click on mount on the usb symbol so that the PC can read the card then Windows Explorer should be able to see it.
