Had my fe41e for 2 weeks and the dvd rom chooses when to work or NOT :smileysad:. Device manager says the driver is corrupt, error 39 !!
Where oh where can i get a new driver. I cant seem to get an answer anywhere i have looked
Thanks
You have had your machine for two weeks, I would firstly contact Vaio-Link, or try and get your computer exchanged as this should not be happening unless you have installed something which may have affected the driver.

Hi dreamcatcher44 and welcome to Club Vaio.
Here is the solution for your problem when using XP. I see no reason why it should not work for Vista - the Registry structure is the same.
You need to edit your Registry - follow the instructions carefully: -
1. Start/Run Registry Editor (REGEDIT).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Click on UpperFilters in the right-hand box.
4. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
5. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
6. Click on LowerFilters in the right-hand box.
7. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.
9. Restart your computer.
After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

I have the same problem with my FE41m, and I believe it's VISTA! I tried to download cdrom.sys from my VISTA CD, but can't find the file. I have to do this on my primary computer, as my Notebook doesn't read the CDs. I think I found software from Panasonic which should work with VISTA, however it doesn't have a digital signature, so VISTA won't allow me to use it. Does anyone know how to get around it?
By the way, if you looked on more web sites, everyone is having problems with their DVD-ROM drives. Mine worked for exactly 2 CDs, then it stopped reading. The drive is not showing any error, it just doesn't recognize the CD/DVD's. Haven't tried burning anything yet....
This is CRAP!

Hi Venta3,
The drivers for your DVD/CD-ROM drive are generic Windows drivers and are unlikely to be the problem.
Do you have C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys on your Vaio.
Have you tried going to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Are there any errors or yellow warning triangles?
Have you tried going to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Are there any errors or yellow warning triangles? Right-click on your drive and choose Uninstall and OK. Reboot your Vaio and this should reload the windows drivers including cdrom.sys.
