DVD-ROM not working

Hi Guys
I have an RS702 just 12 months old.
Recently the DVD-ROM stopped working. When I put a disk in it sounds like its trying to start reading it but never does. In Hardware Device Manager in Windows it shows that the device is working properly.
Any ideas?

Cheers.

Is it recordable media or commercial DVD?

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers and using an optical drive cleaning CD?

It doesnt read anything. Original CD's or DVD's, Pictures, data, absolutely nothing. I would normally just replace as they aren't very expensive but i think it would be hard to find a drive that will fit the case?!?!
Cheers

Not tried the cleaning CD, will do that next.

The guys at PC World said cleaning it wouldnt help. They also tried to sell me an external usb DVD-ROM but that defeats the point of having a vaio!!

Typcial PC World!

Can they not fit a new drive? It's a normal form drive so you'd expect less issues as it's just a door in front of the usual tray

Didnt ask them about fitting one as I pressumed it was smaller than a standard disk drive. Is it easy enough to remove the front and fit one myself?

Typical of PC-World - con-artists!

Anyway it should be easy enough to remove the front panel on the drive but remember to be extremely careful in doing so. Carefully inspect the front of the PC first and see how easy it is to remove.

If it is not possible to push the drive forwards and out of the case over the top of the custom built flaps, push the drive into the computer as far as possible and remove it that way.

The drive in the VAIO will fit a standard 5 1/4" bay without any problems but its the front panel that will cause the headaches.

Cheers for that. No pain, no gain as the saying goes, just have to get stuck in and rip it apart!! I cant remove it from the back because the power supply is about 2-3 inches away.
