Hi Everyone ,
I recently bought a VGN-A317M vaio notebook (03-30-05) but since a few days the disc drive doesn't read anything , it also doesn't burn anything ! I did a firmwire update for the drive PFS3-2 but that didn't make any difrence. I also reinstalled the burnsoftware , installed new software like alcohol 120% en MakeIso, etc..)
But also nothing!
I was thinking to reinstall the wholesystem but the drive doesn't read the recorvery dvd-r which I burned with this drive...
Does anyone knows what the problem can be?
If I let it repair , will it take longer than 2 weeks? Because i'm goinging on vacation , and really need the notebook... Or is it possible to send them the dvd-rw (dw-d56a) only and not the whole notebook?
Thanks for the reply's
Greetzz
It doesn't sound good but there is a slim possability the CD reader lens is clouded. I bought a good quality CD reader cleaner recently. Use it rarely, say, once every two months but that might fix the problem. Don't physicaly touch or try to clean the reader lens. Good luck.
If Tony¿s suggestion doesn¿t work and you still want to try a system restore you can do this from the recovery partition on the hard disk, assuming that you did not elect to remove this when creating your recovery disks.
You can either use the Vaio Recovery Utility, click here, or press F10 at boot.
I'm not sure if you can use RW discs for the recovery.

Start>Control Panel>System Propeties>Hardware>Device Manager>DVD/CD-ROM drives and then double click on your drive and make sure that the driver is installed and ensure its status is ok.
Someone here had a similar problem to you recently with a VGN A397XP. He had tried the firmware update PFS3-2 and it made no difference.
A search revealed that the CD drive, DW-D56A is in fact a re-branded LiteOn SOSW-852S. He discovered that the firmware is interchangable between all the rebrands so he downloaded and installed the PFS3 - stock firmware and the drive worked!
If your drive is a DW-D56A it may be worth a try.
He found the firmware update here.
The url you gave didn't work 😞
