Over the past year I think there have been a numbr of posts about DVD problems with various vaio models. My S series DVDRW packed up after four months! I was abroad but fortunate enough to have an international warrenty which meant that the local Sony branch fixed it without any hassle. Do you have an international warrenty?
Sorry I can't offer any technical advice.

The FS series often have either the Matshita UJ840D or the DW-D56A optical drive fitted. There have been a number of posts on this forum concerning problems with both of these drives.
There are firmware updates available on Vaio Link but I have not seen any reports that this has cured the problem with the DW-D56A, not sure about the UJ840D. If the update makes no difference then I am afraid that it appears the only solution is to replace the drive.

I agree with Rich912.
I'll even tell you why these discussion boards are filled with topics like this one. A dvd-writer (and reader) are just like a human heart. A heart beats for x-times and then it stops. This is the same with writers, because it produces heat and has a laser eye and turns, they will stop working before the rest on your computer.
I'm not discouraging you to use your optical drive(s), it is just a general fact that these are the first things that will stop working properly. Ofcourse there are also manufactering problems with some, but it is impossible to test every model.
I surely hope a firmware update will help both of you.
Good luck and enjoy your time in Asia
