What happen when you first plugged the drive in, did the Hardware Update Wizard start and appear to install the necessary drivers?

Yep, ... the hardware update wizards started ... 'found new hardware to install' showing "USB to IDE". up to this stage everything was fine until message followed by 'you will have problems in using the new hardware.

I'm using WXPP XP2 (all last updates done), have tried all three USB connections, all of them failed. Trying other devices, like mobilephone, mouse and others - no problems at all.

So it seems the problem is the external hhd self. I bought the hdd case and the hdd (btw matxor 250gb unformatted). Did put both parts as mentioned together. Power is there, USB cable is fine and works on other places well.

With the hdd case package did come a driver cd, where it is stated the driver are for win98 but also usable and suitable for WXPP.
Outside of the hdd case is printed as follows: USB2.0 3.5'' HDD Enclosure. Having a deeper lock in to the shipped with driver cd, it's indicating something on VIA Technologies.

I'm correct to open another desktop pc, put in the new hdd as a 'second' hdd > formating there > then back in the enclosure and connecting again? I've not tried this yet but makes it sense?

Yes that is what I mean.
If it doesn't work after that then I would contact the supplier and see if you can get a refund.

Have a look in Disk Management (right click My Computer icon and select Manage) and see if the drive is recognised. It may just be that you need to assign a drive letter and format the drive.

Understood. If possible I'll try this by tomorrow as the computer of my son is protected by password that I'd not know. I'll post the result here then.

However, may I ask you in regarding "assigning for a drive letter"? What's and how to do if I shall give a so-called last try in this manner?

Best of luck with that, let us know how it goes.

You obviously missed the edit to my previous post:

"Unless you have an unknown drive showing you will not be able to assign a ‘new’ drive letter only change the drive letter for existing drives"

Txs for wishing luck in this (silly) handicap I have and understood what you in saying on drive letters. I'm believing in that it makes no sense and no helpful process to postpone the drive letters after C and D. for my new usd hdd and change E to F, and F to G, correct?

Txs for now.

Have done so previously

My Computer>right click to Manage
Computer Management (local) Task>Storage>Disk Management

right side top stays:
VAIO (C:) Partition/Basic/NTFS/Healthy (System)
VAIO (D:) Partition/Basic/NTFS/Healthy (Page File)

right side bottom I can see stated as follows:

Disk 0 | Viao (C:) | Vaio (D:)
Basic
Online

Disk 1 |
Removeable (F:)
No media

CD-ROM 0 |
DVD (E:)
No media

How does it work to assign for a 'new; drive letter? never ever done before.

Txs.
