Noisy harddrive on VGN-S5M

Hi,
Got said laptop, love it apart from 2 quibbles:
1) The harddrive makes an audible whirring noise, not loud but it's noticeable & I haven't exprienced this with other laptops. Anyone else have the same problem?

2) Touchpad seems to intermittedly hang, can't prove it but it seems to me that this happens with the laptop is busy, i.e. reading large files from the harddrive. Anyone else notice this?

I am accustomed to the clicking of my notebook hard drive but have never experienced a whirring noise – I don’t think that this is normal but maybe a member with the same model will comment further on this.

Re the touchpad, are you sure that the correct drivers are installed? In Device Manager have a look under mice and other pointing devices and make sure that you have a PS/2 pointing device and not a PS/2 mouse. If the latter then you need to update the driver and point the install to C:\drivers\pointing (if this folder does not exist then download the pre-installed drivers from Vaio-Link).

Couldn't update the driver as you said as I was already using it.
For your information, the touchpad is an Alps Pointing one.

I will use the laptop for another week, then decide if I want to take it back.

If Device Manager is listing the Alps pointing device then you already have the correct driver. You could always try a system recovery but if you still have the option to return the notebook (bearing in mind the whirring noise from the hard drive) then I would do just that.
