My 1 week old VIAO VGN-A195EP has been working fine. However I have noticed that over the past few days Internet Explorer has crashed with increasing regularity. I can only surf for a very short time now without it stopping - what can I do to find the fault? (XP Pro - SP1)
I recently wanted to reinstall IE6 which is an integrated into XP and the old method of editing the registry did not work anymore.
After delving around on the Microsoft site I found that the reason for this was that I had installed XP SP2.
Apparently SP2 reinstalls IE6 so you could do worse than install XP Service Pack 2.
If you do not wish to install SP2 a search for "Reinstall IE6" at Microsoft.com should reveal an article from the knowledge base which tells you how to remove two lines from the registry, but you will need IE6 in its entirety to reinstall.
Finally, you could resort to the recovery disks and start again.
I personally would install XP SP2 and see if it cures your problem.
Back up any important data first, whichever route you decide to follow. There should be no problems whichever you choose, but it is best to be cautious.

Thanks for that - after reading this forum I am nervous about SP2 - should I be?
SP2 seems to have very few problems on the whole. I would suggest you scan for adware/spyware and do a good virus scan as well, that often is the cause of IE problems.
IE is always a victim of virusses and all that crap, like many other MS products are.
If you dont have a virus-scanner it is a fair assumption that your computer has caught a virus.
The average 'survival' time is about 20-22 minutes at the moment. After that, if you dont have any virusses, you are a statiscal miracle...
So bottomline: try a virusscanner (norton, mcaffee) or some spyware/adaware remover (spy hunter, AdAware).
btw, SP 2 is working fine at the moment. Some irregularities are caused because SP2 makes chances that some programs arent yet equipped to stick by.
that is the reason some things dont yet work fine. "Temporary" according to MS. So how long temporary exactly is, no one knows.
1 windows minute can take up to 10 or even 20 minutes.....
Thanks guys - I updated my Symantec & the virus was found & dealt with straight away - IE now seems to work fine. Still not upgraded to SP2, is it safe to now?
I would do the upgrade !!!
