Ram Memory for S4

I'm using a Vaio S4 Z/S which comes with 256Mb X 2 Ram and was considering an upgrade of say 1Gb. Initially i was planning to remove one of the 256 and swapping it for a 1Gb. However i'm hearing from various sources that I should ensure both cards are identical in size and speed. Is this necessary? also...after opening the module compartment below, there is only one memory module. wheres the other one? under the keyboard? Any help appreciated. Thanks!
