S4XP CD Drive Vibrating

Terrible noise when reading CD-R disks. Plays DVDs silently.

Anyone else found this? A solution?

Thanks

Neil

I have seen this on other models, never worked out why it happens....

The CD will be spinning faster than the DVD. The noise is created mainly by spinning an intrinsically unbalanced 5 inch disc at thousands of RPM. Most drives have a certain amount of acoustic damping built into the mechanism but their effectiveness varies wildly.

High speed notebook type drives are usually the noisiest.

do you notice any heat from the bottom of the laptop towards the right side?

You can reduce the RPM and the vibration with Nero Drive Speed.

Try using a different brand of disc.

I had the same problem with the CD player in my car - made a right racket whirring and clicking. That was using Verbatum discs but when I changed to Kodak discs the problem stopped.

I think Rob hit the nail on the head - unbalanced discs.

Yes. I have this problem too. And it's horrible. My complete VAIO begins to vibrate. I had this problem particularly with PC-magazin discs.

hi,
yes i have only had my vgn-a317m a week now. i have found that when i enter certain websites there are some strange and terrible noises in the background when the download is activated. also i have had a pop up box from the system saying the incorrect volume was put in f drive. what to do?
i find volume very low also in general.

Yes I think a lot of it has to do with unbalanced discs, slightly bent can make them hit the tray.

Sorry I didn't quite understand your question diamond1
