Sony say I shouldn't buy a VP !!!! Get an HD5 instead ?

Here's the deal.

I have a DSC-P100 cybershot. Going on honeymoon for 3 wks to far east and will be taking a lot of pictures. Got a 1GB stick for the camera.

I want to buy a VP (VGF-AP1), and transfer the photos to it for storage to keep the memory stick free for use each day. We can also browse the photos on the VP for fun in the eve's.

My local Sony centre tell me not to buy the VP as it has been discontinued in the UK due to it crashing and peeps losing data.

I expect to be heart broken if I lose the photos ... Does this rep really tell the truth as it seems like a dream machine to me !!

An HD% would do the trick, but without the photo browse option.

Thanks in advance of your advice.

Hi,

have a look at : ww.apacer.com cd21 or cd311 cost about 60 euro without disk about 100 euro with HD, is USB OTG so you cab connect cardreaders, camera's etc. You even have a display to see what you are doing.

Works great.

Good luck and a nice honeymoon.

Hi
I got my VP since one month, I carried out the transfer of images of my Sony Dsc-w1 since two weeks, and they still on it.
For the moment I got no problems and images are not lost in spite of a VP crash.
that's my experiance but wait for other comments !
good luck.

Hi,

Had my VP 3 months now without any major issues. Just returned from hols and used it the way you described with no problems at all. Screen a bit slow loading the images in full resolution but its handy to be able to clear down each day. Plus music on beach great.

Have a good time on honeymoon!

I'm not from the UK but I bought mine in December and it works perfectly.

It gets hunged maybe... once every 2 months or so, god knows why, but reset and it works perfectly again. That's the major issue. Not annoying.

Thankyou all for your comments.

I went for a full demo last night and fell in love with it.
So, I parted with my cash and bought it.

I could have spent a couple of hundred quid buyinjg large capacity memory sticks, but for my money, the VP stands out from the crowd.

Another option was the iPod photo, but it wou't take images direct from my DSC camera, AND it changes the properties of the photo before displaying it to you on screen.

With the VP, the image remains as it was when you took it.

Also very impressed with ease of integration with XP, and transfer speed, however haven't tried the Sonic Stage software yet.

I'm happy.

Well, for all my quarels with the device (sonic stage being very naff in the 2.x stage, some skipping whiles walking and listening to MP3 format) it has NEVER crashed! I've sued it nn-stop since i got mine for Christmas. Saying that, i'd still get an iPod photo now, I just feel let down that Sony have kinda severed ties with this device. Wonder if they'll delete these forums!?
