usb extention cable for webcam

unable to connect usb webcam using an active extention lead, OK on other computer makes, any ideas.

The USB port on your PC won't have enough power. Because a webcam draws all its power through USB, it wont work if the USB cable wont carry the current. CHeck that the extension is of a certified standard.

Also basic electronics tells us that the more connections and grater the distance for the charge to be carried means the greater the resistance and hence energy and signal loss.

Try using without USB cable or with a gold plated cable (better connections, less resistance)

thanks for your very helpful comments regarding the usb extention cable which confirms my own thoughts.My only other comment on this subject is have tried same extention cable on two other older computers and don't have any problems at this 5 metre distance . Thanks again for your help. Ray Penn

what usb version are you using 1.1 or 2.0.

2.0 should work fine as i have a 5 meter extension cable to my ipod.
