The main benefit of WiFi Direct is to transfer large files to anothet device with high speeds. Now Xperia Z has provided a menu for it but its totally a gimmick. Can somebody enlighten me why on earth they have given this feature when it can't give or take files from another device? This is a shame that so much expensive phone doesn't support such a common and useful feature. What is the use of WiFi Direct in this phone? Somehow I managed the absence of native video calls in Xperia phonrs but now WiFi Direct ? Comeon Sony are you kidding me? As I have spent a huge amounton this phone so I expect an explanation from you guys!

you can use Wi-Fi Direct in any mobile device that has this property by using application also support this property correctly.
I advice you to using "ES File Explorer" application, you can download it from Google Play store, it is free, and it is have many fantastic features, one of them is Wi-Fi Direct but you apply it under option called "Send by LAN" beside the "ES File Explorer icon" in any program support sharing like "Xperia Album".
I tried it, and I'm gladly I have Xperia Z, because many reasons, one of them it supports good Wi-Fi Direct with speed faster than any other device.
Note: the other device will be as a second station in Wi-Fi Direct should have "ES File Explorer" application, too. And the process success only when open this application on receiving device.
I wish it work with that idea I gave, because it worked with me, and I sent file has 120MB size in less than 30s to galaxy S3, and take some pics from it by using WiFi Direct by ES File Explorer.
I wouldn't say it's useless either, i use it with my tv all the time to stream music, videos, everything.
although it is annoying that now to stream music since activating it on my tv, it also mirror's the screen, so when i turn my screen off its cuts off connection - when i used to stream via the 'throw' option, i could standby my screen and still be listening to the music via my tv.
Well....i started this topic that WiFi Direct doesn't work on Xperia while transferring files. Today one of my friend suggested me an app which i have tried and i certainly hope that this will end the problem. Please click here :-
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lenovo.anyshare.gps&hl=en
This app is fantastic and above all you can transfer almost any kind of stuff between android phones of any make. Give it a try. The sending Party has to click Send button while the other party has to click Receive.
Enjoy !
This may be a good application for what it's menu offers, but I couldn't find a method that would transfer a folder or files of unknown extensions (including PDF) from one location to another.
If I have missed it please educate me. I will purchase the Pro version of SuperBeam because it claims it can do it, will see. But I guess that it will take the whole folder and put it in a fixed location, sorry for my pessimism.
It also goes to show why Sony is not a market favorite. Some manager there should have realized that this Wi-Fi direct that others claim is available on Samsung is badly needed; and either have purchased a product or gave incentive to Astro or ES File Explorer to add it in for them.
I have not successfully, over Wi-Fi direct, done what can be done with USB OTG or BlueTooth, transfer to Cloud and back, or just removing the SD Card from one Sony to the other. A real shame. Because I want to buy a Sony RX-100 II which is a camera with Wi-Fi from Sony; and I am wondering if I can transfer wirelessly when in the boonies!
For Sony's personnel: I have an Xperia Pro, ION LTE, TX and now Z1. And the only way that I can transfer data, in a short time, is by removal of the memory cards. Others have given you their two cents worth. Today I spent 4 hours on your recommendations on this site; all partially acceptable, none good enough. Now I will do the real upgrade by removing the Flash from TX ==> PC ==> Flash for Z1. It will take less than 15 minutes for all of the 7 Gbytes of data, unless I cannot get the lid off the Xperia TX.
Anyone heard of SuperBeam it's the easiest way ever one QR code generated and scaned by the other and done
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam
Trust Sony to have a blog site that does not show to whom you are replying. Or did I get this one wrong too?
Anyway, I have tested SuperBeam and Lenovo, because it is recommended here by a "Sony" person, and a few others. They all work good for a single file, and mostly under 5Mb when a free app. The directory movement or the target file placement is the inconvenience of all.
wifi transfer pro works on wifi enabled smartphones. I have galaxy tab 7 and xperia phone and I can access data by http link using wifitransfer pro.
What is the wifi direct option which is highlighted by sony playing role here?
I think the person who started this thread has the same question and ended up getting alternatives.
I also want to know the differences wifi direct, dlna, mirror , throw ..and any option that sony highlights for their xperia phones.
Is there a link to doc from sony explaining clear differences?
