Get a grip of the controls!

I have had my vaio pocket for about a month now. At first I thought I had bought a "white elephant" as the controls seemed to be very temperamental to get a grip with. I am eventually getting the hang of mastering them. I do find it can be very frustrating to get the cursor to go where you want, and you spend too much time fiddling about to get what you want. I now have about one fifth of my CD collection which probably accounts for 9gb of hard drive memory on the vaio. What I really like about MP3 players, (and this probably applies to most of them), is the shuffle facility. It's like listening to you own personal radio station without the adverts, DJ's, news interrupting every 3 minutes. My main grip is the almost total lack of instruction that came with my NEW 40gb vaio. Therefore, I like many others I have read about on this very helpful site, have the same problem of how to control the touch pad, and to get the vaio to do the simplest of things. Is there a web site or somewhere to go to get a comprehensive instruction manual to help. Finally, I am trying to persuade my 27yr old son to invest in one, but , because of the control problems, I am inclined to suggest he goes for an ipod instead. I would be interested in any comments regarding the above

i think you can adjust the sensetivity of the pad in the settings menu.

i-pods are white plastic fashion statements.

Owning an iPod shows that you just follow the crowd where as owning a VAIO Pocket shows that you have intelligence.

Nothing wrong with Job's company or the iPod. At least Apple doesn't bury you in DRM or proprietary file formats. I don't know where the Clie fits in with the HD series, but most people who have bought one of those seem extremely happy with it. The Creative ones also seem to be popular.

I would suggest looking elsewhere for reviews to get a general idea of the pros and cons of each player, asking on a Sony site might just give you some biased opinions

For what it's worth, most people seem to agree that the iPod is vastly overpriced, and if an equivalent Sony is cheaper than you really really know it's overpriced.

When the VAIO Pocket first came out the 20gb was £250 now they dont make the 20gb and the 40gb is only £199:smileygrin:

So what are you trying to say, the 40gb will soon become obsolete ?. I spoke to a sony shop salesman this week, who cannot believe the oversight of sony, re not having a suitable carry case available for pocket owners. Whereas almost every music shop has ipod accessories. What accessories are there for the vaio pocket? next to nothing I presume?:smileyshame_on_you:

As with everything in this world, you pay your money and make your choice. I really like the Sony VP, but equally I was going to buy an iPod, and would probably have been happy with it too.

I do have a younger brother who does own an iPod, and can honestly say that on balance, both the build quality and the sound quality of the Sony wins hands down, plus it is a cheaper package.

However, Apple's marketing men seen to have thought about what people want in a portable music player and as a result Apple can supply what ever you want, but at a price. Whereas Sony was probably created by a design department not wanting to be outdone by Apple, but without consultation with the marketing men, and hence Sony have not thought about what comes next.

As I started out by saying, you pay your money and make your choice. But I for one am still happy I took the Sony path.
