Hi
I have recently bought my VAIO laptop (about 3 weeks old)
I am wondering if anybody knows wether i can get the RAM updated without invalidating my warranty. I have bought the laptop on finance.
I was hoping someone knew if i could get it updated via some Sony Centre.
ThanksCan i update my RAM without invalidating my warranty?
Yeah Euganpang i have seen the RAM price on Crucial UK Website. The RAM is cheaper (about half price or less than VAIO) and faster aswell as it runs at 522Mhz rather than 400 Mhz. This shouldn't be a problem though for the VAIO should it?
I noticed that Sony say using other memory can damage your VAIO but i guess that is just a way of them warning us to make sure we get compatible RAM (nice way to get their customers to buy their RAM aswell)
By the way thanks to everyone who has posted.
I would be careful about updating the RAM i have just been through the documentation for my laptop (A Series) and it states that it should be done by professional to avoid invalidating the warranyt in other words if something goes wrong and it was not done by Sony then the Warranty will be invalidated.
Here is the text from the documentation,
Your computer and memory modules use high precision components and electronic connectors technology. To avoid the invalidation of your gaurantee due to mishandling, we recommend that:
You contact your dealer to install a new memory module
You do not install it yourself, if you are not familiar with upgrading memory on a computer
You do not touch the connectors or open memory panel
This is written by Sony to cover problems, to say "well I warned you not to do it if you don't know how or don't use the correct precautions", it's not necessarily that they don't want you to do it, after all if they didn't they wouldn't put the instructions in to do it.
Kee-Lo,
have you heard of any problems with third party memory .... (providing it is put in right) are the chips as good quality as sony's ... any differences in the quality between the various third party suppliers. Quality wise .... who would you recommend?
I am looking for 512m RAM for my VGN S26GP and have been told the mother board is particulary sensative ..... is this an old wifes tale....?
Thanks ..... Martin V
Hi Mart
Considering Sony buy the RAM from Crucial, Kingston and Samsung, buying 3rd party RAM is just as good, as they supply Sony.
All Sony does is slap on their name and they get a licence to sell it as their RAM.
I've never heard a bad word about Crucial
