FS Series Woes, DVD drive wont close

First off I am soooooo disappointed with my laptop, always wanted a VAIO and decided on the FS series for the spec and the weight. Very disappointed with the overall quality.

First off one of the catches broke on the lid, thus it wont hibernate when I close it.

Second and more importantly, the cd drive now wont close!

My biggest problem is that I now live in the USA, Sony wouldnt sell me the overseas warranty after I moved over here as it was over 30 days from initial purchase.

SonyUSA said they would look at it but it may cost me.

Does anyone know of the drive door problem and whether it can be fixed by me?

This is just the final straw, I really feel deflated by the whole experience! :slight_frown:

I can understand your disappointment. Have you not got any friends or family in Europe who you can ship the notebook to? They should then be able to get the problems sorted out for you free (apart from the shipping costs).

Yeah I have friends and family in the UK. In fact my in-laws went home yesterday! I have been told by SonyUSA to reset my bios and that it should sort out the drive thing. Does this sound right? And if so some instruction would be helpful.

Thanks
Not sure I want to ship this thing back to the UK, worried about it getting damaged further

I wouldn't have thought that resetting the BIOS would help in this case. You haven't got anything to lose by it so give it a shot.

Normally, notebook drives have a solenoid operated latch mechanism bur this is not usually visible without dismantling the drive (which isn't a job for the faint of heart)

Good luck with sorting out your problem. Perhaps others have some suggestions . . . .

Thanks for your post. It seems I have resolved the issue.
If I hold the drive in and press the button, let the solenoid click a few times, and hey presto the thing closes.

It now seems to work fine, maybe the catch was stuck.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

Trun your laptop over, do you see a ribbon cable stopping it from closing?

Have a look inside the drive, is some plastic hindering the closure.

Blow as much debris off with compressed air, maybe it'll close again
